Goods Train Crashes into Kanchanjunga Express in Bengal, Casualties Limited by Train’s Rear Composition

Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee confirmed that doctors and disaster response teams were swiftly dispatched following the derailment of three coaches of the Kanchanjunga Express. The crash, which occurred around 9 am, involved a goods train overshooting a signal and colliding with the passenger train in Phansidewa, Darjeeling district.

Railway Board Chairperson Jaya Verma Sinha reported that rescue operations have concluded, with injured passengers now receiving treatment at North Bengal Medical College. She added that the unaffected front portion of the Kanchanjunga Express will resume its journey shortly.

Chief Minister Banerjee shared updates on X, noting that rapid response efforts are underway, including the deployment of the DM, SP, doctors, ambulances, and disaster teams. The Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, who is on-site, announced compensation for victims and assured ongoing rescue efforts.
